02 · The river becomes the battlefield

The river remembers.

In 1671, the Brahmaputra at Saraighat became the stage for the decisive Ahom–Mughal confrontation. The battle was predominantly naval: the Mughal fleet brought larger boats, while the Ahoms relied on smaller, more manoeuvrable craft and carefully chosen river terrain. When the fighting reached its critical stage, Lachit Borphukan personally took command from a war boat, rallying the Ahom forces. The Mughal fleet was defeated and driven westward toward the Manas, marking a major Ahom victory.
