Moiramara Namati Satra stands as a historic centre of Assamese Vaishnavite culture near Howly, carrying a spiritual legacy that reaches back to the seventeenth century.

The Namati Satra was established in 1679 AD by Mukundadev, the grandson of the elder brother of Bhattadev, regarded as the father of Assamese prose literature.

Mukundadev had initially established a satra at Keotkuchi after arriving from Patbausi. He later moved to Namati with his elder wife to establish another centre for religious propagation.

The Namati Satra is Established

Mukundadev founded the Namati Satra after clearing a forested area north of Golia village in Bhawanipur. The institution was established with the purpose of religious propagation.

1897

The Great Earthquake

The devastating earthquake of 1897 damaged the original Namati Satra, leading to its relocation.

After 1897

Relocation to Moiramara

The institution was relocated to Moiramara village near Howly. Following this move, it became known as Moiramara Namati Satra.

20th Century

The Satradhikar Lineage

Following the reestablishment of the satra, Trailokyanath Goswami served as Satradhikar, or head monk. His descendants continue to run the satra.

Today

A Living Spiritual Tradition

The satra continues to maintain its spiritual atmosphere, festivals, rituals, architectural traditions and historic heritage.

DAMODARIYA TRADITION

Architecture shaped by tradition.

Moiramara Namati Satra follows the Damodariya style of satra architecture. One distinctive characteristic is the absence of verandas on the north and south sides.

The institution also maintains an inclusive tradition in which entry is open to all, regardless of gender or caste.

SACRED HERITAGE

The ancient Chaturbhuja.

The Chaturbhuja, or four-armed deity, preserved in the Monikut of the satra is believed to be more than 200 years old.

According to the tradition recorded by the source, the idol was sculpted from terracotta by a skilled artisan from Bhawanipur.

Regular bathing and worship of the Chaturbhuja and Shalagram deities are carried out in the Monikut Griha.

THE NAME · MOIRAMARA

Where does Moiramara come from?

Several legends are associated with the origin of the name "Moiramara", connecting the place to stories of birds and the landscape's past.

The Birds

One belief holds that the name came from the extermination of birds, known as "mora sorai", which were destroying crops.

The King's Hunt

Another legend says that a king once hunted birds in the region, and that the name gradually developed from this association.
