c. 350 CE

The Kamarupa Kingdom

Pushyavarman is traditionally regarded as the founder of the Varman dynasty of Kamarupa. Kamarupa becomes one of the earliest historically attested kingdoms associated with the region of present-day Assam.

7th Century

Bhaskaravarman & Kamarupa

King Bhaskaravarman became one of the best-known rulers of ancient Kamarupa. The Chinese traveller Xuanzang visited his court, leaving an important account of the kingdom and its society.

The Mlechchha Dynasty

After the Varman line, Salasthamba is associated with the establishment of the Mlechchha dynasty, continuing the political history of Kamarupa.

The Pala Dynasty of Kamarupa

Brahmapala is associated with the beginning of the Pala line in Kamarupa, marking another major phase in the political history of ancient Assam.

Rise of the Chutia Kingdom

The Chutia kingdom emerged in eastern Assam, becoming one of the important political powers of the medieval Brahmaputra Valley.

Sukaphaa Enters Assam

Tai prince Sukaphaa entered the Brahmaputra Valley and laid the foundations of the Ahom Kingdom, beginning one of the longest political traditions in South Asian history.

Charaideo Becomes the Ahom Capital

Sukaphaa established Charaideo as the early political centre of the Ahom kingdom. It later became an important sacred landscape of Ahom royal burial mounds, known as the Moidams.

15th Century

Srimanta Sankardev

Srimanta Sankardev's devotional movement transformed Assamese religious, literary, artistic and cultural life and became one of the defining forces of Assam's cultural history.

Suhungmung & Ahom Expansion

Under Suhungmung, the Ahom state expanded considerably. Political integration and interaction with neighbouring communities helped reshape the social and political landscape of the Brahmaputra Valley.

Ahom–Mughal Conflict Begins

Conflict between the Ahom kingdom and Mughal forces became a defining feature of 17th-century Assam. Guwahati and the Brahmaputra corridor were strategically important to both sides.

Guwahati Recovered

Ahom forces recovered Guwahati from Mughal control and prepared for another major confrontation along the Brahmaputra.

1671

Battle of Saraighat

Led by Lachit Borphukan, Ahom forces defeated the Mughal army in the Battle of Saraighat on the Brahmaputra near Guwahati. The battle became one of the most celebrated episodes in Assam's history.

Battle of Itakhuli

The Ahoms defeated Mughal forces at Itakhuli. The victory effectively brought the long series of Ahom–Mughal conflicts to an end.

1699–18th Century

Rangpur & Sivasagar

Rangpur became a major Ahom capital and developed into a remarkable centre of architecture, tanks, temples and royal buildings that survive as some of Assam's most important heritage monuments.

Rang Ghar

Pramatta Singha rebuilt Rang Ghar in brick as a royal sports pavilion. The monument remains one of the strongest visual symbols of Ahom architecture and Assam's historic heritage.

Moamoria Rebellion

The Moamoria rebellion began a prolonged period of internal conflict that weakened the Ahom state and contributed to political instability in the late 18th century.

Burma • Yandabo • British Rule • Resistance

1817–1821

Burmese Invasions

A series of Burmese invasions devastated Assam and severely weakened the Ahom political order. The crisis opened the way for British intervention.

Treaty of Yandabo

The Treaty of Yandabo ended the First Anglo-Burmese War and marked the beginning of British control over Assam, bringing the long Ahom political era to an end.

Resistance to British Rule

During the wider uprising of 1857, figures such as Maniram Dewan became associated with resistance to British colonial rule in Assam.

1861

Phulaguri Dhawa

Peasants in Phulaguri resisted colonial policies and taxation. The uprising became an important early expression of organised popular resistance in colonial Assam.

1894

Patharughat Peasant Uprising

Peasants protesting colonial land revenue policies gathered at Patharughat. British forces opened fire, making the event an enduring symbol of resistance.

Partition of Bengal

The partition of Bengal reshaped the administrative geography of the region and brought Assam into a changing political landscape during the rise of Indian nationalism.

Quit India Movement

Assam participated strongly in the Quit India Movement. Kanaklata Barua became one of the most remembered young martyrs of the movement in Assam.

1947

Independence of India

India became independent from British rule. Assam entered a new political era within the independent Indian Union.

A New Northeast

Meghalaya became a separate state, reflecting the continuing reorganisation of India's northeastern region and the changing territorial history of Assam.

Assam Movement

A mass movement began in Assam around the question of electoral rolls, migration and citizenship. The movement continued for several years and became a defining chapter in modern Assam's political history.

Assam Accord

The Assam Accord was signed between representatives of the Government of India and leaders of the Assam Movement, bringing the major phase of the movement to an end.

21st Century

Assam's Heritage Reaches the World

Assam's historical landscapes, monuments and cultural traditions have increasingly gained national and international recognition, with heritage conservation becoming an important part of the state's cultural identity.

Charaideo Moidams Enter UNESCO's World Heritage List

The Moidams of Charaideo, the royal burial mounds of the Ahom dynasty, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, bringing one of Assam's most distinctive historical traditions onto the world stage.
